Water for Elephants is a romantic drama where lovers are played by Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon. The star of the movie is however its biggest star, elephant-Tai, who made her way to the Pattinson’s heart.

Robert Pattinson plays veterinary student in a film based on Sara Gruen's bestseller Water for Elephants situated in 30’s depression in United States. Life treats Jacob (Pattinson) hard until he gets a job from circus as a veterinarian. It is lead by cruel ringmaster August (Christoph Waltz). His young wife Marlena (Reese Witherspoon) is the draw of the circus and Jacob becomes attracted to her. The movie is directed by Francis Lawrence.

For the last 6 months Pattinson has been filming the last two parts of Twilight saga in Louisiana. The actor made a quick stop in Los Angeles before heading to Vancouver to finish the filming of Breaking Dawn.

Water for Elephants was mostly filmed in California near the farms where exotic animals are kept for filming purposes. The movie begins were tragically but these events lead Jacob to animals and love.

"Basically life flipped him finger. He has no way to turn back to his old life so the only possibility is to leave distress behind and look forward. Everything happens so fast that Jacob didn’t even have time to wallow in self-pity. I thought that it must have felt like a shock. I didn’t have many lines in the beginning so I just played with gestures, expressions and other physical ways," Pattinson tells.

The beginning of the movie was also otherwise challenging for Pattinson because as a rookie his job in the circus was only to listen.

"When I read the script for the first time I thought that all the pressure are on Christoph and Reese. Then I noticed that I was in almost every scene even though I didn’t have any lines. It was slightly stressful but Francis was very good at calming my nerves. He knew all the time what he wanted so I trusted him. On the other hand the movie isn’t only based on actors’ performances but we are a part of spectacle which biggest star is the elephant."

The elephant who played Rosie made great impression on Pattinson.

"When I went to meet the elephant, Tai, she was in hand stand on her front legs. I spent hours with her and we tossed a ball. Tai snatched the ball with her trunk and tossed it back. I knew then that whatever the movie will be, at least I get to work with this amazing elephant for three to four months."

Pattinson admits that he is a friend of animals but doesn’t like circus."When I was five I was in Zippos-circus in London with my mother and sister. I remember when the clowns came to the circus in a little car. One of the doors exploded and I thought that the leg of the clown was broken. My sister said that the clown died! I was in that belief even two years ago when I was telling the story. My mother heard my rambling and wondered what I was talking about, the clown didn’t die. Anyway, I was so traumatized about it that I haven’t been in circus since" Pattinson laughs.

Water for Elephants was a better experience for Pattinson because no injuries were required this time. Pattinson thanks the director for that.

"He had so much to do in practical arrangements only but was always sure about everything. The budget wasn’t big but Francis had the responsibility of 200 animals, 300 extras, circus tents and trains. He took huge risks all the time. For example the scene in the beginning, where the circus tent is put up by hundreds of men, was shot by one take. Francis wanted to shoot it right before sunset and we had 20 minutes time to prepare for the scene and 7 minutes to shoot it. I didn’t believe that it could be done but Francis didn’t hesitate a second," wonders Pattinson.

The other massive scene in the end of the movie where the tent is pulled down was also shot with “all or nothing”-attitude.

"We shot that on the last day during sunset. In the inside and round the tent was piled with explosives and when they exploded the area was covered in enormous trail. When the sun was set behind the trail was seen a flagpole with American flag. It was the only thing standing up after explosion. The crew couldn’t believe their eyes. No one could have imagined that something like that will happen and that it is captured on film. Francis just followed calmly eating peanuts. He never stressed about anything."

Pattinson is on his way to becoming a specialist playing in movies where the theme is forbidden or unusual love. The proof are the Twilight saga, Remember Me and Water for Elephants.

"In the movies love is always connected with problems. If everything went smoothly from the beginning to the end it would be a bad movie. But I like this story because it is the beginning of Marlena’s and Jacob’s love story. I didn’t want to be supposedly good guy who comes and seduces August’s wife and ruins his lifework. The most important thing for Jacob is that he gets Marlena to believe herself and that she deserves a better man than August – Jacob or someone else."

The humble star also knows his limits because he thinks that he can only handle certain genres.

"I don’t think that I could play in every genre movies. Most of the scripts that I read aren’t for me. No one would take me seriously in the movies based on those scripts. I say yes to a movie when I read a script that has role which I believe I can play."

With Twilight there has formed a permanent “circus”, that consist of passionate fans, paps and other curious people, around Pattinson. The actor assures relieved that the situation has calmed down a bit.

"Nowadays I always go inside from backdoors. That is why there is a less hustle and I wouldn’t even have time for that. In the beginning it was unusual experience when the crowd went crazy. Now I go to the events tired. I film half a day, go to the airport, a car is waiting me at the destination where I fall asleep immediately, I spend 10 minutes in the event handing out a award or show myself, go back to the car, to the airport and to the filming location."

In order to relax, Pattinson compose and plays guitar. "I always travel with my guitar but it isn’t so fun anymore because I can’t drink whole night and stay up till 5 am," Pattinson laughs.

Dressed in black jeans, plaid shirt over a white t-shirt and a gray wool jacket, Rob sat down to talk with us about his new movie, is a good opportunity for this irresistible hottie!

17: What made ​​you participate in this film?
RP: Before reading the script or the book (the movie is based on the novel, Water For Elephants by Sara Guen) Francis, the director, took me to the Elephant Sanctuary where Tai lives (the elephant who plays Rosie). I arrived, and immediately started playing with her. I thought, “I will have the opportunity to work with Tai for four months, I’m definitely accepting this role!”

17: What is the relationship between Marlena And Jacob, like?
RP: The relationship between Marlena and Jacob gets complicated with time. Marlena is trapped in a abusive marriage. I think Jacob is a good guy and I did not want to play him as someone who comes to the circus world, that was created out of nothing by August, to steal his wife and destroy his life.

17: What is your character, Jacob, like?
RP: He had to face the challenge of losing his parents at an early age and has had to learn to move on.

17: What do you do on a day off?
RP: i play a game in my iphone application called Fall Down, I can use it for 16 hours

17: What makes you really happy?
RP: Music, I went to New Orleans and played the piano with the Preservation Hall Jazz band. It was amazing, I was fascinated.

17: What makes you cry?
RP: I cried the last day that Tai was on the set of Water For Elephants, and during the film, March Of The Penguins

17: What did you like about the book and this character?
RP: I read the screenplay before the book and thought ‘I can do this. ” I thought there was something very attractive and touching about the story. The next day I read the book and I loved it.

17: How did you prepare to play Jacob?
RP: I liked the idea of interpreting it as someone who truly loves Marlena and does not want to destroy everything that is his life. He cares for her very much and is pretty much resigned to not having her, if it means she will be happier.

17: How was working with Reese?
RP: That was my first job in my career and she is the same now as she was at that time. I did not know what I was doing during that time. I had no experience as an actor and got the job by accident, so i was absolutely terrified. She went to my trailer before filming began and said, “Do you want to review your dialogue and talk about the scene?” She was incredibly famous and was not obliged to do that. I was sitting there in the cab of my little trailer and said. “Well, okay.” I had no idea what I had to say. It was nice working with her on that occasion. Reese and I have met a few times through the years and it always has been so great. How she appears on screen, she is the same in real life. She has an aura of good energy that she shares with everyone.

17: What was the biggest challenge in the film?
RP: When I read the script for the first time I felt that my character initially did not have many scenes like the others and I thought to myself, ‘Well, the pressure will be on Reese and Christoph, not me,” and then I realized that I’m in every scene but did not say anything at the beginning of the film.

17: How did you feel working with animals?
RP: I think I have more affinity with animals than with people. For many reasons, I prefer working with animals and children than with actors. Often when your working with actors, it becomes something almost competitive … Another reason I like working with animals is that they do not know if you’re the star or just an actor.

17: Have you always been an animal lover? Did you have a pet?
RP: I had a dog for 18 years named Patty and it was incredible. I got another dog a few days ago in Louisiana. I decided to rescue a dog from a shelter, they were about to put it down. I don’t really know what breed it is, It’s a mix of everything.

17: Teens from all over the world love you, how does it feel to be a heartthrob?
RP: It’s weird, I never got heartthrob roles before Twilight. It’s funny when the world suddenly turns and you are seen very differently.

17: Are you disciplined when exercising?
RP: At the beginning of the last film of Twilight, I trained obsessively and I decided to be very, very healthy, going to the gym and riding a bike everywhere.

17: Now you live in Los Angeles, Do you miss your home in England?
RP: Yes, definitely. I miss the newspapers, still prefer the English papers. Strange to read the sports section. I miss football. The Arsenal is one of my favorite teams. I miss the English light. I know it sounds really ridiculous, but the light in London is different to anywhere else in the world.

17: What are your goals?
RP: I want to produce films and be more involved in pre-production of films I star in.

17: Your career has taken an extraordinary leap, what has been the greatest lesson you’ve learned along the way?
RP: That there’s no point in trying to please everybody, which I learned when trying to do just that.

You’ve worked together before, how was that experience?
Reese: Yes! We met on the set of Vanity Fair. I played his mother (laughs). I was like 28.
Rob: I was like 16.

Can you describe your journey as Marlena?
Reese: It’s amazing. I feel so lucky playing this role. Marlena was abandoned when she was little and she found her way in 1920 America, a time when the country was going through the Depression. It was a great experience playing a woman that has an amazing journey through out the movie going through a violent relationship and finding finally some hope in her life.

Rob, when does Jacob join the circus?
Rob: He’ studying to become a vet in College. He’s about to take his finals when his parents die in an accident. He finds out they put their home on a second morgage and the clinic where he was supposed to work to pay for his studies. He gets on a train and tries to find job, he realizes he’s on a circus’ train. He sees Marlena the first day and she’s one of the reasons he decides to stay and work for the circus.

Reese, how was your training for the movie and your training to work with the elephant?
Reese: I trained for three months. I visited twice a week at her ranch where she lives with 6 other elephants. I fell off many times, but she’st is very skilled. She can pick up things the size of a pencil or a person. She picked me up with her mouth the first time we met. It was incredible.

Did you bond with the elephant in real life?
Reese: Yes. Today is the last day on set and I’m very sad about it. aving this amazing relationship with an animal is so magical.
Rob: I’m sad too. It’s weird. These elephants have an amazing aura. You feel so peaceful when you’re with them. I could sit next to her all day.

What about the other animals?
Rob: The lion gets mad pretty easily (laughs).
Reese: The zebras are crazy! One time one of them ran loose and we all had to run away from it, I took Christoph and had to hide behind him.
Rob: I think the zebra ran directly toward me (laughs), so I got out of the way like any sane person would, and I turned around the corner and it looked like Christoph was protecting Reese, but in reality, she was grabbing him like a shield in front of her (laughs).

Was it challenging working with horses?
Reese: It was harder than the training with elephants. I grew up riding horses but I hadn’t done it in a while. n the movie I had to straddle the horse and perform many stunts.

Was it easy for you to play your role, Rob?
Rob: Yes I think I can relate more to animals than to people. I discovered that each animal has its weaknesses. If you bring mints and candy elephants will love you. Giraffs will do anything you want if you wash your hands in fruit juice. There was a giraffe that trainers had been having problems with for 6 months because she refused to do anything. I went to her with my arms soaked in apple juice and she followed me everywhere.

Did you read the book before the movie?
Reese: I hadn’t read the book before making the movie. It was one of the books that I had in my house but had never read, I thought “I’ll read it soon” but never did. I found that it’s a beautiful love story. Sara Gruen, the author, did some major research for this book. It must’ve been a wonderful experience for her when she visited the set and seeing all the things she had imagined being brought to life.
Rob: I hadn’t read the book until I got the part. I was reading it on a plane and I realized a girl next to me was reading it too. Then I had to fly to do some final scenes for Eclipse and another person was reading it on the plane. It was so weird.

This role if very different from your role in Twilight. How exciting is this to you?
Rob: It’s amazing to work with such great actors. I didn’t know what to expect when I signed on. When I met the elephant I thought she was so amazing and I didn’t want anyone else to play this role. This has been an amazing experience from day 1. Everybody is very involved. It will be a great movie.

There’s tension in the air. When Robert Pattinson enters the hotel room in Los Angeles, everyone is silent. Taller than I imagined and with grayish blue eyes more pervasive than I anticipated, he soon breaks the ice with a rather shy - but totally sexy - smile. And he excuses himself for a minute to check his dog in the next room. Hi? Pattinson comes back apologizing. "He’s just so young and isn’t used to my tight schedule yet," he says, jokingly. "Now, yes, we can start." The lucky puppy is Bear, a mutt, a mix of German shepherd and some(s) other(s) breed(s), he adopted in a public shelter in Los Angeles. It’s a low blow.

This Taurus guy, who’s about to turn 25 years old, seems to have matured since he started doing the vampire Edward Cullen, in Twilight. "While filming 'Water for Elephants' I felt confident. I’m no longer terrified with the possibility of making mistakes," he says, referring to the film that hits theaters April 29, in which he plays a circus veterinarian and stars steamy scenes with Reese Witherspoon, 34. Moreover, in other movie, Bel Ami, release due to October, he is paired with Uma Thurman, 40. Acting with older women is different? "The age doesn’t matter, both in movies and in real life. I think." Still, he can’t hide his reserved Englishman style. Maybe that's why the informality of Brazilian people (mainly Brazilian girls) caught him by surprise. The actor went to Rio de Janeiro to shoot Breaking Dawn scenes. "We were shooting on the street and suddenly several girls who were extras came to talk to me, try to hold me... I continued working because I didn’t know if it was part of the scene or not. The crew began to laugh. Later, my security guard said he wouldn’t intervene because he ‘noticed I was enjoying it' [laughs]. I've never seen anything like it. They’re a totally uninhibited and lovely people." When I wonder if Kristen Stewart, Bella from Twilight, feels jealous, he frowns with a smile: "I think we should concentrate on the movie I’m here to promote" Still, he adds that the only downside of fame is having to hide. "Nothing stresses me. But when I began to notice that there’s always someone following me, with an unfriendly expression, I learned to protect myself."

So much harassment makes no sense to him. "Deep down, it’s a matter of luck. You work in several movies and nothing. Suddenly, many people like one, and... boom! It turns your life upside down. But with recognition comes the need to prove that you deserve it, especially in my case, since I haven’t done so many movies to conquer this position." To get there, he’s extremely focused on his career. "I want to prove that I can be an extraordinary actor."

You don’t have to be intelligent to understand that, generally speaking, there’s worse than becoming a poster guy who has to hide from hordes of screaming fans into five-star hotels all around the world. And Robert Pattinson sounds very intelligent. He’s young (he’s turning 25 in May), has a lot of money, success, a job which loads of people envy him and could have all the women he wants. Yet, it stands out a mile he’s not happy about it. And I guess the reason is that he is intelligent enough to understand not to be so special.

He’s very down to earth, while everyone around him goes crazy. That makes him a good guy, but terribly alone. We wouldn’t be surprised if one day he decided to pack and leave. I met him some weeks ago for the promotion of his new movie Water For Elephants.

He’s just bought a dog. He really wanted it. “I don’t know how I’ll handle it, but if you have to travel around the world, it’s good to have a mate. I took him from the animal shelter: I laugh if I think that he went from a shelter to a suit of the Four Season Hotel.” It’s not what happened to him. Well, almost.

Rob was born in London; his mother worked for a modeling agency, and his father Richard, imported vintage cars from the U.S; when he was a child he thought he would deal with International relations. But then he got the part of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the goblet of fire. It happened by chance as well as for the the role of Edward Cullen that has changed his life.

Music was his passion, but he had to put it aside for now. “I play sometimes, but you have to be concentrated to do it seriously, and I do not have so much time right now.” I point out that many actors do both, he bursts out laughing “yeah, but look at the results. It’s embarassing”.

So, apart from changing the subject when speaking about his relationship with Kristen Stewart (not even Oprah managed to make him talking), Robert says he spends his time working (mostly) and among beers, gym, cigarettes and junk food. But he really needs to sleep, he adds. “I worked last night. I’ve just come back from Lousiana”. Luckily at that age, sleep deprivation doesn’t make wrinkles on your face, but makes it look sexier somehow.

In Louisiana he’s shooting the first and the second part of Breaking Dawn at once. The first one is coming out on November 18th, 2011. Meanwhile in LA, Rob’s trying to build a career outside of Twilight. In Water For Elephants he plays Jacob, a veterinary school student struck by his parents’ death. With no money and no home, he starts wandering until he sees a train of a circus and jumps on it. There he meets two creatures: the elephant Rosie, and the star of the show Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), who is also the despotic ringmaster’s wife (Christopher Waltz).

Is it true that the first thing you do when you are given a script is read the first and the last line?
“If the screenwriter is good, the beginning and the its work and there’s a 75% chance it’s a good story. Otherwise, the best thing to do is forget it. Today the problem is that scripts with the worst-written first pages are those that are made into movies and and make more money.”

-Are you saying that Twilight is bad-written?
“Things don’t always work this way. But it’s true that when I first read it, it didn’t appeal to me. I couldn’t understand what was so special and why everybody was so into it.”

- Water For Elephants is a romantic movie.
“Yeah, but what appealed to me was the historical period, the Great Depression and the circus. It’s so intriguing. Chlidren don’t dream of running away with a film crew, but with the circus. It still happens today, I guess. At least they did in the 30’s, when there was no tv and no cinema down the street. Besides I liked that it was also about animals and and human-animal relationship (he stops and bursts out laughing). I know, it sounds weird this way.”

-Anyway, the fact remains that it’s mostly about the love story between Jacob and Marlena.
“In the beginning, you may think “oh there comes the guy, he’s going to meet the girl and it’ll be love at first sight. Then they’re going to run away together”. But it’s not like this. It’s a more complex story. Jacob falls in love with Marlena, but doesn’t try to bring her with him. She first kisses him and then rejects him, but indeed he accepts her choice. She will always be an extraordinary woman to him, no matter what. Jacob just wants to give and doesn’t ask for anything in return. That’s the best kind of relationship.”

-Could you ever have a relationship with a married woman?
“Life is not black and white. There are married couples that never see each other. Is that marriage? But there’s a thing I’ve never got, that is why do people cheat?”

-You can’t understand a behavior which is typical of the majority of people nowadays.
“I can understand the impulse, but not how you can keep two relationship going at the same time for long. This usually happens to people with children, but I can’t really get why a non-commitment guy would choose to date four girls at the same time either. It must be hell, especially for men”.

-Why especially for men?
“I think it’s more complicated for men, because somehow they have to “provide for” their women. I’m not talking about money support, but about enthusiasm: they have to cultivate the relationship. Doing it with more women at the same time would be very hard, a real work.”

- Are you saying that because you’ve already tried?
“I’m not the casual-affair kind of guy. If I choose to be with someone it’s because I really want it. When I have a relationship, I’m 100% into it. If I felt like seeing more women at once then I wouldn’t go around saying “this is my girlfriend”.

- So you do not believe in cheating. And what about the until-death-us-do-part love, like the one in movies?
“My mother was 17 and my father was 25 when they met, they’re still together and look very happy. I’ve grown up believing that you can stay with the same person throughout your life.

- Speaking about parents, in Vanity Fair you played Reese Witherspoon’s son. But then your part was cut from the movie during the editing.
“It was my first movie. She was already famous, and I remember she was very nice to me: she always asked me if I wanted to read the lines together, if I had doubts or questions”.

- In less than 10 years you’ve turned from being mother and son into lovers. What do you think about it?
“Well, looking back on it, I think that let me play her son didn’t make any sense. I mean, she wasn’t even 28, she was too young to have a kid. That’s why they decided to cut it, apart from other problems. Another reason was that our scene together was way too depressing. The problem was that nobody told me anything. I found it out when I went to see it. At the end, someone was supposed to ask Reese “Are you going to meet Rawdy?”, that was the name of my character. She was supposed to say yes and there I would have come. But she said “no”.

- Bel Ami, starrring Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman and Kristin Scott Thomas, is coming out this year as well. You play the part of a seducer and make sex with lots of women. Then we have Breaking Dawn in November, where you and Bella finally have sex. You mentioned many times your unease shooting these kinds of scenes. Are you getting used to it?
“It wasn’t that difficult in Bel Ami, since we were dressed most of the time. Twilight worried me a lot instead: there are high expectations and everybody is talking about it. So I went to the gym every day for a month. It was the first time I was in shape in all my life.

- Was a month enough time?
“Yes, but anyway I could’t have done it for longer. Oh, you forgot Cosmopolis. That’s plenty of sex scenes. In one of them a girl shoots me with an electic gun, it’s crazy!”

- So going back to my question, are you getting used to it?
“I don’t know. But I know I will have to go back to the gym.

-You are not a physical fitness buff, aren’t you?
“I go from one extreme to the other: before starting work I practice for four hours per day, every day. Then I stop. It’s the same story with alcohol: all or nothing. In Louisiana it’s very difficult to resist temptation; but I found out that if I drink 5 beers a day, doing sport is useless. Try as you might, your body won’t change. I think I should really stop drinking, too.
