We chose not to post the original review this article is referencing. In all fairness the film is still in a very raw form therefore not an accurate representation of what the final product will be. We would rather movie goers not form an opinion sight unseen based on a review of an unfinished product. We thank you for your understand and with that in mind read the following from our affiliates at BelAmiUK
I have spent considerable time reading, re-reading and attemtping to make sense of the Soho Bel Ami test screening review provided by Craig Rook. While I do not know Mr Rook, I do feel that we need to take a step back from this review and break it down for a little between the lines reading. We have also made the decision not to post the review as it provides us with nothing we didn’t already know and may well be promoting some undertones that we may have seen before.I also took some time to have a little chat with our official source around the comments made in the review, while they did not attend this particular screening we do know they have already had sight of the movie and were impressed with what they had seen, this is what they had to say on the matter:
“The film is at a really early stage and not even near a final cut so it is very early to comment on something like this. Obviously films are tested as part of the editing process and this is all a normal part of the process. It is worth noting that the reviewers disappointment is more focused on Robert than the film itself, so perhaps he is not a fan?”
So then I have to go back to the review again and feel that the general gist of it is a follows:
First off we get an outline of the novel ~ ok we know that already so let’s move on. Then we see praise provided to the leading ladies [kind of expected] and some recognition for the supporting males. Then we hit the crux of the review with the key words of note being ’vamp tag and glamourised’ wrapped up with ‘shallow’ and questions posed over casting choices.
Let us cast our minds back a very short while to the release of Remember Me, if I recall I remember reading many many reviews pretty much all saying the same thing. We no doubt will be seeing lots more of these ‘early reviews’ popping up all over the place, and I am sure we will see pro and anti reviews everywhere, but at the end of the day it is you at the box office that will decide how successful films like these are. If the trend remains the same it would seem like we are again being told who should and should not play a particular role. Also whether this person is worthy of the chance to play such a role given as they have come from a franchise, have not served their time and are not given to copious butt licking [anyone springing to mind here?].
I for one remain open minded, to date I have been impressed with Robs choices and versatility, I do not hold with being told what I am going to like and not like, that is my choice and only my choice to make. All that we can do is read the reviews and make up our own minds about what we are being told, then we can decide if the review is objective or are we indeed being subjected to some form of manipulation.
Bring on Bel Ami and be assured we will keep you informed with any updates as we get them.
